DESTINATION × MICE × BLEISURE: WHEN A BUSINESS TRIP GOES BEYOND THE MEETING ROOM

For many years, the value of a business trip has often been measured by what takes place within the programme: an effective meeting, a professionally organized conference, or business networking opportunities created along the way.

However, with the rise of Bleisure – Business combined with Leisure, the boundaries between a business trip and an experiential journey are becoming increasingly flexible.

For the MICE industry, this shift raises a broader question: How much can a destination contribute to the value of a programme beyond simply providing a venue?

From this perspective, a destination is no longer merely the “backdrop” where an event takes place. It can become an integral part of the MICE experience – from accommodation, dining and leisure to culture, entertainment and extended journeys before or after the main programme.

FROM MICE VENUE TO MICE DESTINATION

A traditional MICE programme typically revolves around three fundamental elements: venue, programme and operational services.

However, as the expectations of business travellers evolve, the MICE journey is increasingly viewed as a holistic experience.

Delegates do not spend all their time in meeting rooms. They may arrive a few days early, extend their stay after a conference, or combine a business programme with personal experiences. A morning meeting may be followed by an evening exploring local cuisine; a multi-day conference may become the starting point for a leisure, wellness or cultural journey.

This is changing the role of the destination.

A valuable MICE destination is not defined solely by its ability to host events, but also by the experiences it can open up around those events.

BLEISURE AND THE CHANGING VALUE OF A BUSINESS TRIP

Bleisure is not simply about “adding a few days of vacation” to a business trip.

From a broader perspective, it represents a shift in how business travellers use their time and experience a destination.

A well-designed trip can create multiple layers of value at once: achieving business objectives, expanding networking opportunities, experiencing local culture and creating time to recharge after intensive professional schedules.

For businesses organizing MICE programmes, this also opens up a new perspective on programme design.

Instead of focusing solely on the question “Where will the event take place?”, planners can begin asking additional questions such as:

  • What can delegates experience before and after the event?
  • What leisure products does the destination offer that are suitable for MICE groups?
  • How can the conference be connected with local cuisine, wellness, golf, beaches or culture?
  • How can the length of stay be extended naturally?
  • More importantly, how can the destination experience contribute to the value of the event itself?

This is when MICE begins to move beyond the boundaries of a conventional conference programme.

DANANG: FROM A MICE DESTINATION TO AN EXPERIENCE ECOSYSTEM

Danang has a notable advantage when viewed through the lens of Bleisure: its ability to naturally connect business, leisure and surrounding destinations across Central Vietnam.

According to Phu Long Hospitality Newsletter #3, the Danang market recorded approximately 15% RevPAR growth in the first six months of 2026. The report also highlighted the growth potential of several segments, including MICE, wellness, golf, culinary and long-stay, as well as travel routes connecting Danang – Hoi An – Hue.

These factors provide an important foundation for developing MICE from a destination-led perspective.

A delegate travelling to Danang for a conference can continue to extend their journey in many ways: relaxing by the beach, exploring local cuisine, experiencing the culture of Hoi An, discovering the heritage of Hue, or simply taking additional time to recharge after an intensive professional programme.

As a result, the value of the trip is no longer limited by the conference schedule.

WHEN A CONFERENCE BECOMES THE STARTING POINT OF A JOURNEY

In this context, Ariyana Convention Centre Danang can be viewed not only as a conference venue, but also as a starting point for connecting MICE programmes with Danang’s broader experience ecosystem.

A conference may begin with meetings and professional programmes at Ariyana Convention Centre Danang, but the delegate experience does not necessarily end when the final session concludes.

From the conference venue, the journey can continue with a dinner, a leisure experience, wellness activities, sports, culinary exploration or a trip to nearby cultural destinations.

Conversely, experiences beyond the meeting room can also contribute to the MICE programme itself: a networking activity can become more natural when set within a local context; a gala dinner can gain additional value by reflecting the destination’s culture and cuisine; or an incentive programme can become more memorable when designed as a journey rather than a series of standalone activities.

The destination, therefore, does not exist outside MICE. It becomes part of the MICE experience.

FROM “MEETING” TO “JOURNEY”

The development of Bleisure also suggests a new approach to designing MICE programmes.

Instead of viewing the journey as a simple sequence of arrival – meeting – departure, the destination can be integrated throughout the entire journey:

BEFORE THE MEETING
Delegates arrive early, enjoy leisure activities, explore the destination or combine the trip with personal experiences.

DURING THE MEETING
Conferences, exhibitions, networking and professional programmes take place at the venue.

BEYOND THE MEETING
Delegates extend their stay, experience the destination or combine their trip with other destinations in the region.

This approach can not only enhance the delegate experience but also create additional value for the broader local tourism ecosystem – from hotels, restaurants and attractions to MICE service providers.

A MICE DESTINATION IS MORE THAN WHERE AN EVENT TAKES PLACE

As MICE is increasingly viewed through the lens of experience, the concept of a destination also needs to be expanded.

A competitive destination needs more than sufficient infrastructure to host large-scale events. It also needs the ability to create diverse experiences that encourage delegates to stay longer, explore more and remember more.

This is also an opportunity for Danang.

With its advantages in beaches, leisure, cuisine and wellness, its connectivity with Hoi An and Hue, and an increasingly developed MICE infrastructure, the city is well positioned to evolve from a MICE venue destination into a MICE experience destination.

Along this journey, venues such as Ariyana Convention Centre Danang can serve as a connecting point between the business experience and the destination experience.

Ultimately, the value of a business trip does not necessarily end when the meeting ends.

When Business is connected with Leisure, a MICE programme can become the starting point for a broader journey – where work, connection and destination experiences come together to create the value of the trip.
