Sustainable MICE might not only be seen through a “green event”, but from how many decisions are made before, during, and after the program. From the selection of venues, energy, materials, catering and food services, and transportation to connecting with suppliers and the local community, every element can become a part of sustainability. In the context where Đà Nẵng has just issued the Green Tourism Accommodation Criteria, the orientations for accommodation activities can also suggest further approaches for MICE.
From “green accommodation” to “green events”
Within the framework of the Technology and Innovation Exhibition & Forum for the Tourism – Service Industry in August 2026, the People’s Committee of Đà Nẵng city issued the Đà Nẵng Green Tourism Accommodation Criteria. This is defined as a tool to orient and encourage accommodation establishments to voluntarily apply it in accordance with actual conditions, without generating new legal obligations or administrative procedures.

From here, a broader question can be raised for the MICE industry: if sustainability has been integrated into how an accommodation facility operates and serves meetings, how can similar principles be expanded throughout the entire journey of an event?
THE VENUE CAN BE THE STARTING POINT OF A SUSTAINABLE EVENT
For MICE, choosing a venue often starts with familiar questions: what is the capacity, is the space suitable, how is the technical system, where will the guests stay, and how is the connectivity. From a sustainability perspective, an extra layer of questions can be added: how can that venue help connect the program’s needs and how does it limit unnecessary arising activities?

Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary – a highly valuable cultural destination in the MICE journey
A multi-day conference may simultaneously require meeting space, accommodation, catering services, transportation, and side activities. When these needs are organized within a connected ecosystem, organizers have a better basis to consider travel options, schedules, and more suitable resources.
GREEN PROCUREMENT: FROM SUPPLIERS TO LOCAL VALUES
A large-scale event requires a multitude of products and services: from equipment, decorative materials, publications, and gifts to catering services. Placed in the MICE context, these orientations can open up a different approach. Instead of merely wondering if a product is “green” or not, one can also consider its origin, life cycle, packaging, and connection with the supply chain at the destination.
A conference can incorporate local products into gifts, prioritize local ingredients in catering services, or collaborate with local service providers. Such choices do not automatically make an event “sustainable”, but they can contribute to creating a more cohesive organization method with the location where the event takes place.
TRANSPORTATION AND COMMUNITY: VALUES BEYOND THE AUDITORIUM
An event does not start when guests enter the conference room, nor does it end when the program closes. The guests’ journey of moving, staying, eating, and experiencing the destination can be viewed as part of the overall MICE activities.

Furama – Ariyana Đà Nẵng International Tourism Complex
This raises questions about how to organize bus routes, select venues, connect the accommodation and the event venue, as well as introduce appropriate methods of transportation. In Đà Nẵng, the Furama – Ariyana International Tourism Complex, which includes Furama Resort Đà Nẵng, Furama Villas Đà Nẵng, and Cung Hội nghị Quốc tế Ariyana Đà Nẵng, is an optimal solution. Combining accommodation space right near the conference venue helps shorten the travel distance of attendees, thereby contributing to reducing the need for transit vehicles and limiting emissions during the event organization.
Sustainable MICE may not necessarily start from a grand goal or a “green label” attached to the event, but from how each decision is considered right in the organizing process. From selecting the venue, transportation method, supply sources, materials used, catering and food services to how to connect with the local culture and community, every step can open up opportunities to reduce environmental impact and add value to the destination. As orientations for sustainable development are gradually concretized into operational practices, sustainability can also become a more natural part of how MICE events are designed and organized.
