[Danang, May 13th 2024]
The 2024 Southeast Asia Iron and Steel Institute (SEAISI) Conference and Exhibition, the region’s premier event in the steel industry, was held from May 13 to 15, 2024, at Ariyana Convention Centre Danang. The conference brought together over 500 major industry players from the Asian steel sector, including industry experts, associated trade associations, and government representatives.
Themed “Surviving and Thriving in the Decarbonized World,” the conference featured a series of trade promotions and specialized seminars that introduce the latest steel production technologies and provide forecasts on global steel demand in the coming years. Nghiem Xuan Da, Chairman of the Vietnam Steel Association, stated, “The conference is an excellent opportunity for us to discuss policy development, technology, and the challenges and opportunities towards a sustainable green steel industry.”
According to Dr. Edwin Basson, Director General of the World Steel Association, global steel production has increased tenfold since the 1950s. The steel industry has been profoundly impacted by four major trends intensified by the pandemic, bringing significant changes: technological advances, socio-economic transformations, geopolitical shifts, and notably, climate change. Adaptation is crucial through reform phases, and by 2050, it is expected to achieve green steel-based circular economy, as mentioned by Dr. Basson.
Since 2015, Vietnam’s steel industry has developed into one of the leading manufacturers in ASEAN for production and consumption of finished steel products and ranked 12th in the world in crude steel production by 2023 with an output reaching 20 million tons. However, the industry remains a major greenhouse gas emitter and environmental impactor—responsible for 7% of national total emissions and about 46% of industrial processes, according to experts. At the conference, Tran Chi Cuong, Vice Chairman of Danang People’s Committee, requested that all levels of Central and local State Management Agencies pay attention to creating conditions for the Vietnam Steel Association and the steel manufacturing business community to have qualified to carry out green transformation, contributing to Vietnam’s commitments made at the Climate Change Summit – COP26. “It is recommended that experts and international organizations pay attention and support to help the Vietnam Steel industry share experiences, technology, techniques, financial support, human resources and management solutions to build, develop and implement a carbon neutral roadmap,” emphasized Mr. Cuong.
Danang, a leading tourism and conference hub in Vietnam, is proud to host this significant event. Ms. Truong Lan Huong, Managing Director of Ariyana Convention Centre, expressed, “The theme of this conference aligns perfectly with Danang’s and Ariyana Convention Centre’s strong commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, striving to become a green and smart city. We are honored to host the 2024 SEAISI Conference and Exhibition, contributing to the greening of the industry and the development of local tourism.”
The exhibition area included steel companies from Southeast Asia and well-known brands from countries with advanced steel industries like Australia, Japan, and South Korea. The event promises numerous business, learning, and development opportunities for participants, contributing to the sustainable development of the steel industry and regional economies.
